Design search launched for Redland Whitewater Centre

Expressions of Interest are now open for a Principal Consultant to lead the design of Queensland’s first whitewater venue at Birkdale.

The Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) is looking for a design partner to shape the Redland Whitewater Centre. This is the first step toward construction as part of the $7.1 billion Games Venues Infrastructure Program, funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.

The venue will be built within the planned Birkdale Community Precinct and will be only the second of its kind in Australia. The centre’s versatile design will cater for elite and recreational rafting and paddling featuring an international standard canoe slalom course and kayak cross launch platform

The Centre will include amenities such as changerooms, boat storage, and a spectator terrace with temporary seating for up to 8,000 during the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Beyond the Games, it will offer year-round benefits for the community, including recreational paddling, adventure activities, and disaster resilience and swift-water rescue training for emergency services – creating a versatile asset for Queensland.

Expressions of Interest close on 21 January 2026.
